This beautiful area of Banff National Park in Alberta offers stunning views, both indoors and outdoors.

Lake Louise is a stunningly beautiful body of water located in Banff National Park, located 37 miles from the town of Banff. There are mountains on two sides of the lake that shoot up dramatically into the sky. Sitting between them is a glacier which feeds the lake. On the fourth side is the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. As the glacier melts during the summer months and feeds the lake, it gradually goes from being blue and clear to a greenish turquoise as the summer progresses and minerals build up in the water. The lake can be viewed from afar, while canoeing on it, or from the comfort of the Chateau.

Lake Louise Ski Area and Mountain Resort

The best view of Lake Louise from a distance comes when taking the gondola up the mountain at the Lake Louise Ski Area and Mountain Resort. It allows travelers to see the lake in the overall context of the dramatic wilderness surrounding it.

While the mountain provides great skiing in the winter, in the summer it is known as being a hangout for bears. There are warning signs for hikers on days when bears are seen, and while visitors might not want to walk up the mountain on those days, they can still see the animals from above while riding the gondola.

Canoeing and Hiking at Lake Louise

The most immediate and up-close view of the lake comes from actually being out on the water. Canoes are available for rent and visitors can paddle through the water while enjoying the views of the mountains towering overhead. The Chateau offers early morning and sunset canoe excursions that include coffee and snacks.

The lake also serves as an excellent starting point for a hike around the area. The best known journey is the “Tea House” hike, which takes hikers to a tea house along with stops at Mirror Lake and Lake Agnes.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a large, beautiful hotel with rooms providing incredible views of the lake. However, those who are not staying at the hotel can still enjoy the views as part of a visit that could include shopping, dining or just walking on the boardwalk in front of the lake.

Another excellent way to enjoy the lake view from the hotel is the in the Lakeview Lounge. One can enjoy traditional English afternoon tea with a pot of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Special Blend with homemade scones and pastries, or if there later in the evening, small plates with drinks.
